My car still won't work! I can't get it to run enough to make it around the block more than once. I need to massively restrict the air going into the carb to get it to not idle nearly as rough (even when the car is stupid hot). I have no clue what I'm doing anymore. I'm 18 and never have even seen a working carb, I don't know nobody who knows how to work on Qjets, and I don't think any garage in town know how to work on them either and their diagnosis of my problems would be "You need an LS motor." I know you guys can't help but I'm posting this anyway. GERRRRRASFFDS:OJ@Q&#$(*&#@%)(*&#%@(*&$OIHJGRSDsf ANGRY TYPING JH%$&(*%(&* FUCK IT.

What's it doing that causes it to die? Elaborate on "running rough".

I don't know. That's the problem.

Describe it best you can. Like, it'll be idling fine but when you put load on the engine (in gear + gas), it sputters? Does it cough and spit or does it just stutter and lag? What RPM is it at when it does that?

At the end of the day, cooler heads always prevail. Take a deep breath, calm down, and a solution will likely present itself.

If it starts the idle will either jump all around (from 1000rpm to around 1500rpm) or will be crazy high (2500rpm) if it doesn't die immediately. I can get the engine to run better if I restrict the air going in by closing the choke plate, but that should kill the engine when it is hot and the choke isn't needed. When it does allow me to put it in gear (and doesn't die) the engine starts to run worse the hotter it gets and will die. My guess is something in the fuel to air mixture is off but no matter how much I play with the choke and fuel/air mix screws nothing helps. Every now and then it shoots gas out the top of the carb, when driving it bogs massively. Also, I think the engine is overheating but my temp gauge isn't working

I don't know if you've checked, but does your fuel lines run near anything hot?

You could just send the carb off for a rebuild, or to save some money j ust buy this book.

Sounds like it's running lean. Which agrees with my hunch that it might be a stuck float needle. Needle sticks, float bowls wont fill up, or if they do, they're not getting a constant amount of fuel to the jets, and the engine will be all over the place. Bog off throttle sounds like lean as well. If it was rich it'd be backfiring (out the exhaust) and popping. So I'd check if the float needle is sticking.

You said you rebuilt the carb? Did you follow a guide of some sort? It might be time to start taking the QJet apart level by level and trying to find an issue. Not putting you down at all, but QJets are finicky carbs to rebuild, and I'd recommend maybe finding someone in your area or someone online you can ship it to to have it rebuilt.

Other possible solutions: Find a cheap carb on CL (either a QJet or another variant), ask seller if you can "try it on the car" and see if that works better (unlikely that'll happen), or just say screw it and either buy a QJet or an Edelbrock 1406 from Summit.

I have a 1406 carb that was working on my chevy. It is backfiring too...

Like, when you put it on the engine in the car now it backfired, or just before you did the engine swap shenanigans it backfired?

I meant the engine is currently backfiring. I haven't put the 1406 on this engine

Now I'm working with half the cylinders and wrong country, but gotta use the universal logic of the mythical gas station mechanic approaching your problem.

Double check the plug wires, grounds, distributor condition. make sure your fuel is clean. Good electrics, grounds.. I replaced the rotor, or installed one correctly, whichever one you prefer, made sure to re-tighten ignition connections and my crazy 1/8 cycle hiccup went away.

Gas: Crappy. Car: Old. Tank: variable compositon of oxides and petrochemicals made worse by ethanol..Change the fuel filter(s) since there's not use getting all the way there just to 'check' them. Unless you just did it.

Carb adjustment is the realm of wizards. I try to fix everything around it first.

That'd be my go to. Take the QJet off, throw the 1406 on it because those things are fairly bulletproof and easy to tune, see if it improves. Problem solving is all about narrowing down the issues. Try that, see what happens, if it runs better, clearly a carb problem and like I said, might have to start tearing back into the carb.

Yeah. That sounds like a decent idea. I can't run the edelbrock permanently because it won't fit under my hood with the required square bore to spread bore adapter.

If you have to restrict air going into the carb to idle you have an air leak (aka vacuum leak) somewhere.

Have you tried the squirt bottle test on the intake tract?

Send an Email to Hot Rod magazine asking for help, they might help. And if anyone can make it work it would be Finnegan and Freiburger.
